Kiska presented Slovakia´s commitments at the NATO summit

Kiska presented Slovakia´s commitments at the NATO summit

On Friday, President Andrej Kiska presented the commitments adopted by the Government of the Slovak Republic at the NATO summit in Warsaw. Along with the President, the summit was attended by Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic General Milan Maxim.

In 2017, Slovakia despatch 150 Slovak troops and 35 pieces of equipment to the Baltic countries as part of the joint training mission of the Visegrad Four countries. Czech troops should be the first to arrive in Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia, followed later by the Slovak, Hungarian and finally Polish troops. The soldiers will be on three-month rotations in the region.

In Warsaw, Slovakia reiterated its commitments made in the previous NATO summit in Wales to spend 1.6 % GDP on defence by 2020 and 20 % on modernisation of its armed forces from the Defence Ministry budget. “We have confirmed that out commitments made in Wales will definitely be fulfilled and an increase in the 2017 budget to 1.16 % GDP has been declared,” Minister Gajdoš said.

The President recalled that the NATO summit was about the strengthening of security and peace and mutual assurances of the Alliance members that each of them was fulfilling their respective commitments.

He also pointed to the presence of several thousands of Russian soldiers near the Baltic states´ borders, and that their people were afraid of them. “Our greatest support to our Allies in that respect is in the fulfilment of our commitments,” Andrej Kiska underlined.

On Saturday, the developments in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan summit will be deliberated by the summit. The delegations will address the migration crisis, and cyber security.
