Kiska in Mexico: We express the same values

Kiska in Mexico: We express the same values

President Andrej Kiska on Tuesday began an official visit to Mexico. In the capital, he placed a wreath before the Niños Héroes Memorial. It is devoted to the heroic death of young cadets who, in the Battle of Chapultepec during the Mexican War with the US, preferred death before surrender.

At the National Palace, the President met with the Mexican head of state - Enrique Peña Nieto. The presidents discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, economic cooperation and signed a joint declaration and bilateral agreements.

Andrej Kiska, during the opening statement, thanked the Mexican president for his warm welcome, expressed regret at the recent earthquake that hit the country, and highlighted the effort at building relations between Slovakia and Mexico.

At the Government Office of the Mexico, Andrej Kiska met Prime Minister Miguel Ángel Mancer Espinos, from whom he received a key from the capital. According to Kiska, this symbol unlocks the hearts of people.

“It challenges us to join together, because this country is amazing and beautiful. But Slovakia is also an amazing and beautiful country. And I believe that this key, this symbolic gesture, today helps to open  better connections and familiarity. Today, distances do not play an important role if people can find their path to each other.”

The President ended the tour of the capital with a visit to the Metropolitan Cathedral and the archaeological zone of the ruins of the Templo Mayor. This temple was built by the Aztecs at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries in the heart of Tenochtitlan. But as soon as Spain captured the capital, the temple was razed to the ground. According to locals, its ruins were even used to build the above-mentioned cathedral.
