The urban bees from the hives in the Presidential Garden have produced their first honey

On 4th of September 2020, president Zuzana Čaputová harvested the honey from the hives in the Presidential Garden.

The honey will be used as gifts for political partners in Slovakia and abroad. The Office of the President began participating in the Urban Bees project organised by the Živica Centre for Environmental and Ethical Education in May this year. The president wished to highlight the importance of bees and beekeeping.

She said that the first honey harvest was proof that nature will reward us if we take care of it: “Bees have a vital function and without them, we ourselves wouldn’t be here. Bees show us how all of nature is connected. They enable our gardens and balconies to bloom and keep our crops growing. Just yesterday there was a report that beekeepers in various parts of Slovakia are having one of their worst years in the last three decades. Their problems are linked to climate change, which is causing big shifts in the way individual plant species flower so that there are brief periods when there is too much pollen and long gaps between them.”
