President of Slovenia Borut Pahor visiting the Slovak Republic

President of Slovenia Borut Pahor visiting the Slovak Republic

On Wednesday 22 July 2020, President Zuzana Čaputová welcomed the Slovenian President Borut Pahor. He is on an official visit of the Slovak Republic upon President Čaputová’s invitation.

The presidents met in the Presidential Garden and discussed the current situation including the coronavirus pandemic, measures to mitigate the impact of the economic crisis as well as the countries’ economic transformation through the European Recovery Plan.

“Slovakia and Slovenia are very similar countries, not just when it comes to the name,  languages or beautiful mountains. Our countries have successfully transformed themselves from socialist states to modern European democracies. I am convinced that we have a lot to learn from each other. Today, both countries are facing a new challenge – how to best cope with the economic and social impact of the pandemic. I am pleased that Slovakia and Slovenia have both given strong support to the creation of the EU’s Next Generation Fund, which will help us get through this situation if we use it wisely. I also hope that the Fund will  also help transform our economies and make them more modern, innovative and greener. We must not waste the chance to move our country a generation ahead.”  President Čaputová also emphasised that it is important to prepare a high-quality recovery plan.

The presidents also talked about the need for the European Union to protect the values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law. “If these values are not respected, it is a legitimate reason to withdraw some of the benefits the EU membership entails. I look forward to further discussions and joint activities.”
