State Visit of Milo Djukanović, President of Montenegro, to the Slovak Republic

On Thursday, 15 July 2021, President Zuzana Čaputová welcomed Milo Djukanović, President of Montenegro, during his official visit to Slovakia.

The presidents discussed support for reform and the integration efforts of Montenegro and the enlargement of the European Union by the Western Balkan countries. "We agreed that strengthening democratic processes and institutions was the only way. Therefore, I inquired about how new impulses could be brought to Montenegro’s reform process, particularly in the areas of rule of law, combating corruption and the independence of the media and protection of journalists. If Montenegro wants to achieve European integration, these areas must be strengthened. Not because this is one of the conditions for joining the Union, but because these steps will create conditions for democratic and sustainable growth and improve the lives of the people of Montenegro. We know this from our own, Slovak experience."

President Djukanović’s visit to Slovakia took place only a few weeks after Montenegro celebrated the 15th anniversary of the restoration of its independence. Slovak diplomacy, which played a crucial role in the preparation of the referendum concerning the peaceful separation of Serbia and Montenegro, has been perceived very positively. "The EU is the closest partner to the region of Western Balkans. However, this does not mean that some things cannot be done better. This is also why I appreciate today’s visit – I believe that it will send a clear signal to all pro-European powers in the region that we care about these things.”
