President Čaputová sees shared political values after high-level meetings in Germany

In Berlin, Zuzana Čaputová met President Steinmeier and Chancellor Merkel.

“There are only a few countries that Slovakia has so much in common with as Germany. I found that we have the same political values of cooperation, a constructive approach and an emphasis on freedom and human dignity. We have the same view of the world and the problems that we need to face together today. Germany is a strategic ally for Slovakia and our most important trading partner, providing work for more than 120,000 of our citizens. This means that when Germany does well, so does Slovakia.

We currently hear a lot about the differences between old and new members of the European Union, between east and west, north and south. There is no European country with so much experience of overcoming divisions as Germany. Germany knows how extremely difficult, but also how important it is to find things that unite us. Today we urgently need to bring the German experience into the EU. I therefore hope that Germany’s voice will be heard clearly in Europe. We have a shared vision of our future in a strong and united Europe based on mutual confidence, understanding, cooperation and solidarity. We are also committed to joint solutions for climate protection, European social policy and strengthening the EU’s role in the world.

We want to develop our existing European freedom and strengthen it with social stability and security for all citizens of the European Union. For us at home, it is essential to show that people in Slovakia have greater social security thanks to good cooperation in Europe.”
