COP28: Our efforts must be ambitious and collective

COP28: Our efforts must be ambitious and collective

On Friday, 1 December 2023, President Čaputová gave a speech at the COP28 UN Climate conference in Dubai.

In her speech she emphasized that we can avoid the current course that is leading us to doom, but it all depends on the decisions that we make. "The solutions are right in front of us. Feasible, effective and low-cost options are already available to mitigate the climate crisis impact. We have the necessary technology, resources and skills. Let’s use them."

According to the president, our efforts must be ambitious, collective and universal. All great economies must join, including the largest emitters such as China, which along with Russia has not even committed to being climate neutral by 2050.
The president also noted that Slovakia has been doing its homework. "Our emissions have peaked already. By 2030, they will be 55% lower than in 1990. In the next seven years, we will invest 5% of our GDP from public sources to decarbonize our economy and society. At the end of this year, Slovakia will no longer use coal as a source of electricity. In three years, we will phase it out from heat generation. By 2030, we plan to reach 29% of renewables in our electricity production. 85% of our electricity is already made with zero emissions."

The president also commented on our plans to decrease emissions in heavy industry, where we are turning to cleaner and more modern production.
"I trust that the conclusions of this COP conference that will be adopted in two weeks will be as ambitious as possible. If we do not take action in the following two years and become climate neutral by 2025, we will make life less bearable for the generations that come after us.”
