President after NATO Summit: We are more united than ever before

President Čaputová represents Slovakia at the extraordinary virtual summit of NATO on Friday 25 February 2022.

The president joined the online negotiations from Warsaw along with the other leaders of the states of the NATO Eastern Wing, the so-called Bucharest Nine (B9), comprised of the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Slovakia.

According to the president, the summit was a strong message of unity and agreement among the 30 member states of the Alliance.  "Vladimir Putin hoped that he would divide us, but today we are more united than ever before. And we are resolute in defending our countries, our sovereignty and our citizens.  Because the attack on Ukraine is also an attack on the democratic values of our countries. I met the partners and presidents who like us form the Alliance’s eastern border, the B9 group. Their citizens are also concerned. But I will bring to Slovakia the common energy and resolution which we felt at the end of the summit. We stand by Ukraine, we will help and defend it by effective sanctions towards Russia, we will strengthen the defence capabilities of the Alliance’s entire eastern border and most importantly, we will not give up."
