The president supported the global campaign to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.

The president supported the global campaign to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.

This weekend President Zuzana Čaputová joined the worldwide campaign “Global Goal: Unite for Our Future” to develop treatments and a vaccine for COVID-19.

The aim of the campaign is to support the development of a vaccine and treatments for COVID-19 that would be accessible to everyone in the world. President Čaputová joined world politicians such as Angela Merkel and the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, as well as celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Shakira, Coldplay or Miley Cyrus, who supported the campaign with online messages and performances. President Čaputová also appeared in a short video promoting the concert that was broadcast globally.

On Saturday 27 June 2020, the president also spoke at an online donor summit of world leaders initiated by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. President Čaputová supported the campaign’s goals and highlighted Slovakia’s donation of EUR 750,000 based on a commitment made in May. During the summit, the president also pointed to research undertaken in Slovakia and the results that have been achieved, including a Slovak test for COVID-19:

Slovakia ranked as one of the countries with best coronavirus response. But to really overcome the crisis, this must be everyone's victory, not just of the few. We need a treatment and a vaccine, one that is accessible to everyone irrespective of one's race, economic might or political power. Irrespective of which country or continent we come from. We are facing an enormous challenge. Yet this also gives us an opportunity to show that we can join forces. Because it is the weakest among us that will determine our real strength. Slovakia is not standing aside: we contribute financially and through our scientific findings. We are in this together. And together, we shall overcome.

The summit achieved the collection of a record sum, EUR 6.15 billion, for the development of vaccines against the novel coronavirus. The summit was held after a video conference on 4 May 2020, during which leaders committed  to mobilise funds from their countries to speed up vaccine development. The European Commission’s main partner in this campaign is the American NGO, Global Citizen. Other partners include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropists, Wellcome Trust and the United Nations.
