The values connected with the first republic are important even today

President Čaputová gave an interview to Czech Television on the occasion of the anniversary of the creation of the Czechoslovak Republic.

In addition to others, she stated that the values connecting us with the first republic such as democracy and truth continue to be important today. In connection with the words “Truth Prevails” of Tomáš G. Masaryk, the first President of the Czechoslovak Republic, the president noted that truth as a value is under attack. According to her, we cannot agree on what the truth is. “Expertise is questioned and respect for education is lacking. We must be determined to get to the truth.”
According to the president, complicated times await in connection with the pandemic. She considers the split of society to be the most destructive element. “It seems to me that sometimes we are divided along insignificant lines. If we could agree on the basic values of truth, love and humanism, which are the legacy of the first Czechoslovak Republic, society would be more coherent and we would be able to better cope with the crisis.”
