The president praised the courage of firefighters who went to help in Greece

On 18 August 2021, President Zuzana Čaputová thanked members of the Fire and Rescue Brigade who helped to put out extensive wildfires in Greece.

The president said that Slovak firefighters had become a symbol of professionalism and generosity. “The mission in Greece was a great professional challenge for each of them. They faced a wildfire on an unprecedented scale. Besides professionalism, they demonstrated courage, empathy, solidarity and above all the ability to collaborate. We at home were proud of them. Our firefighters managed to unite Slovakia in positive feelings for a moment. They helped Greece and represented the Slovak Republic in a wonderful way.”

The president also observed that firefighters never know whether they will come back from their mission alive and well. “They risk their health to save others from death or injury. Specific human lives and property remained safe on Evia even after their mission. Today I gave them heartfelt thanks on behalf of all of us. I likewise thanked their colleagues who are even today helping to remove the effects of the storms that we have experienced at home.”

The president presented the president’s medal of gratitude to the leader of the ground-based forest fire fighting team, Col. Peter Kovalík, to thank the whole team for their dedication.
