President meets compatriots in New York

On Sunday, 17 September 2023, President Čaputová began her working trip by meeting compatriots living in New York.

As she said, she found a piece of Slovakia in the middle of Manhattan. The president participated in the mass in the church of St. John of Nepomuk.

The local Roman Catholic parish was founded by immigrants from Slovakia at the end of the 19th century, and since then it has been a place where compatriots living in New York meet regularly.

The mass was celebrated by Father Štefan Chanas, who comes from Košice and has been in New York since 2003. Afterwards, she met talented Slovak students from top local universities and teachers of Slovak weekend schools in New York and New Jersey at the local parish.

"Thank you for the warm welcome and many cordial conversations. It is encouraging for me to see that our compatriots are united not only by faith, culture and language, but especially by a common wish for Slovakia to thrive and be successful."

The President arrived in New York late Saturday evening Slovak time. She will attend the 78th UN General Assembly next week and address the general debate on Wednesday. It will be her last appearance at the United Nations as president of the Slovak Republic.

She will also speak at the Sustainable Development Summit, which is one of the most important events of this year's UN General Assembly, and will attend a reception hosted by US President Joe Biden.

In addition, during the week she will open the Slovak Pro Summit, the aim of which is to connect successful Slovak professionals and experts who work in the United States and are interested in helping Slovakia's development with their experience and knowledge.

The trip will culminate in a gala dinner on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic and 30 years of membership in the United Nations, at which the president will welcome other heads of state, as well as important figures of the Slovak and Czech communities in the United States, together with Czech President Petr Pavel.
