The President attended the Mass at Šaštín and said farewell to the Pope

On Wednesday 15 September 2021, President Zuzana Čaputová said farewell to Pope Francis at Bratislava Airport before his return to the Vatican. 

The farewell ceremony was also attended by the Speaker of the National Council Boris Kollár, the Prime Minister Eduard Heger, the State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ingrid Brocková, the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to the Holy See Marek Lisánsky, the Mayor of Bratislava Matúš Vallo and staff from the Bishops’ Conference of Slovakia and the Office of the President. 

In the morning, the President attended the open-air Holy Mass at Šaštín, celebrated by Pope Francis in honour of the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, Slovakia’s patroness. Shortly after his plane took off from Slovakia, Pope Francis sent a message expressing his deep gratitude to President Zuzana Čaputová and all the people of Slovakia for their warm welcome and hospitality. He added that he would pray for the peace and prosperity of the Slovak nation.
