President attends Three Seas Initiative

President attends Three Seas Initiative

On Wednesday, 6 September 2023, President Čaputová attended the summit of presidents of the Three Seas Initiative in Bucharest.

The goal of the initiative is to strengthen the cooperation of the states, mainly in building north-south connections in areas such as transport, energy and the digital sphere, which was also the main topic of the joint negotiations. The Three Seas Initiative was established in 2016 and unites 12 countries between the Black, Baltic and Adriatic Seas (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Croatia, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia). The summit also included an accompanying business forum with Slovak companies.

"Before the fall of the Iron Curtain, connections in Europe were mainly built in the east-west direction. However, after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and the change of the security situation in Europe, we need to build connections in the north-south direction, with an emphasis on the region of Central and Eastern Europe. It is important that Slovakia be part of such joint projects, and therefore a group of businessmen who will participate in the following business summit are part of my delegation."

The summit leaders also paid attention to the issue of reducing dependence on the supply of energy raw materials. The president also spoke with John Kerry, the special US climate ambassador, about deepening cooperation in the field of energy security and low-carbon technologies.

She also used the Three Seas Initiative Summit to speak with many colleagues. "We spoke with Hungarian President Katalin Novák about the solution to illegal migration, which is currently our common problem. One of the necessary solutions is to strengthen the protection of the external Schengen border that Hungary has with Serbia, and which is currently one of the entry gates for illegal migration. We also discussed this topic, but also the situation in our region, with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen. I'm pleased that we travelled back together and that we are continuing the tradition of joint presidential flights."
