President participates in NATO Summit in Brussels

President Čaputová participated in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Brussels on Monday 14 June 2021.

The leaders of more than 30 states discussed the further direction of NATO at this summit, which resulted in the approval of proposals which will strengthen the Alliance and the collective defence and ensure security. "The negotiations confirmed our joint effort to ensure security even in times of growing instability, the strengthening of authoritative regimes and threats arising from the abuse of modern technology.  For Slovakia it is important that the signal from today’s summit is clear and unambiguous: we are united, we are strong and our transparent alliance is firm.  We have the political will, plans, resources and capability to protect our citizens from security threats.

The discussed topics and priorities will be transformed into a new strategic concept of the Alliance which will be approved next year. The president considered it important that the areas which appeared to be especially vulnerable during the pandemic, such as our readiness to cooperate and face disinformation and propaganda and our ability to protect critical and information infrastructure, were also discussed at this summit.

The president also met American President Joseph Biden for the first time. They discussed cooperation, democratic values and the importance of the rule of law, which are highly essential for both countries.  President Čaputová pointed out the significance of the return of Europe’s strategically valuable ally.
