President receives the Emperor Otto Prize

President receives the Emperor Otto Prize

On Wednesday, 30 August 2023, President Čaputová received the Emperor Otto Prize during a ceremony at the Cathedral of Saints Maurice and Catherine in Magdeburg.

The president of the Slovak Republic was honoured for her merits in the battle against corruption, her efforts to consolidate liberal European values and her personal contribution to the protection of the environment in Slovakia. On this occasion, former German president Joachim Gauck delivered the laudation.
The president considers the Emperor Otto Prize mainly as an honour for Slovakia and its citizens, as well as a motivation to all those who want to continue protecting common democratic values and European cooperation. According to her, it is the duty of each generation to protect democracy.

“It is still the case today, when democracy becomes the target of daily attacks in many countries. More and more politicians are taking advantage of the crisis which we face, along with the natural fears many people have of the future to challenge democracy itself. I have mentioned in my speech that it is not a solution to be overtaken by fear of what will come, but to find solutions. And to continue in a patient dialogue with those who have different opinions.”

In her speech, the president stressed, among other things, that democracy cannot survive without democrats, without responsible individuals who practice democratic values in their everyday life.

“Democracy requires leaders who see politics as a service to the public, and not gladiators seeking to destroy their opponents. Leaders who are mature individuals, who understand the temptations of political power and are capable of resisting them. Leaders who know that empathy is a quality of the strong. Who see decency and respect for others as a strength, not as a weakness.”

The Emperor Otto Prize has been awarded every two years since 2005 to those who have contributed to European understanding, promoted liberal values, peace, tolerance, and democracy and assisted in the deepening of the European unification process. In the past, the prize was awarded to Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Klaus Iohannis of Romania, among others.

Today’s prize is the eighth prestigious international award that President Čaputová has received during her mandate.
