President receives Justitia Award

President receives Justitia Award

President Čaputová accepted Justitia Award at the Presidential Palace on Thursday, 3 February 2021.

The award, which was granted by the Women in Law Initiative of Vienna, was presented by its highest representatives Alix Frank-Thomasser and Franz J. Heidinger.

The Justitia Awards honour outstanding women in law in three categories: international leaders/life time awards, academia and game changers / pioneers / young achievers. President Čaputová was nominated in the first category, in which the organizers selected the most talented and influential women who essentially change society thanks to their erudition and innovativeness. These awards are presented to the women of the year from the field of law.

Due to the pandemic, last year’s ceremony was held virtually. In her acceptance speech the president stated that this award was more of a pledge than a reward.  "It is a pledge to keep protecting what is right, protecting justice and the rule of law. At the same time, it is a pledge to continue to support and inspire other women who have decided to enter the legal profession.”

The mission of the Women in Law Initiative is to connect female legal professionals from around the globe and offer them an exceptional platform for discussions and the exchange of information and experience in diverse economic and social areas with a legal component. The Initiative strives to improve the situation for women in legal professions and strengthen female leadership.  It connects women – lawyers – practitioners, as well as researchers, scholars and law students.

The Initiative, which is a member of the European Women Lawyers Association, was founded in 2018 as a permanent continuation of the international Women in Law Conference, which was held for the first time in 2019. From the very beginning it has received broad support and patronage from UNESCO.
