The President Appointed Igor Matovič’s Government

On Saturday 21 March 2020, President Zuzana Čaputová appointed the government led by Prime Minister Igor Matovič. She wished the members of the new government all the best, but pointed out that the time and the situation were too precarious for anything other than a government that honoured the constitution and was honest, diligent, self-sacrificing, brave, decisive and responsible.

“Today you are taking on not just power but, above all, responsibility for this republic and its inhabitants. Even a slip that would normally be just a matter for media criticism now risks undermining the fundamentals that we all depend on to deal with this situation. The common foundation on which we all stand is our faith in each other. Citizens need to have faith that the authorities will act in their interest and you must have faith in citizens’ commitment to the instructions, rules and guidance that you give them. We have to keep building, cultivating and protecting this faith
every day, over and over. Today is no time for division and arguments about irrelevant matters. Now is the time to act as an organised, coherent and compassionate society where everyone asks what they can contribute to our common success.”
