President Delivers Video Speech at Climate Ambition Summit

President Zuzana Čaputová delivered a speech by video at the Climate Ambition Summit on Saturday, 12 December 2020.  

This event, which was organized at the initiative of the UN, the United Kingdom and France, was held online. It creates space at the level of the Heads of States and Governments to present new ambitions and commitments in the battle against the climate crisis.

According to president Čaputová, we must act swiftly and in unison.  She pointed out that Slovakia intended to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2030 and to become carbon-neutral by 2050.  She also mentioned the legacy in the form of heavy and high-energy consuming industries. According to the president, Slovakia is prepared to act.
The Summit was held symbolically on the 5th anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Climate Treaty and prior to the UN Conference on Climate Change, which will be held next year in Glasgow. The Summit was opened by United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the co-organizers – French President Emmanuel Macron, the President of the French Republic and Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. They were followed by speeches by other political leaders, including president Čaputová and representatives of towns and cities and non-governmental organizations.
