President Starts to Work in Košice

President Starts to Work in Košice

On Monday 25 April 2022, President Čaputová commenced a week of working from Košice.

The president first met with Jaroslav Polaček, the Mayor of Košice and Rastislav Trnka, the Chairman of the Košice Self-governing Region. “We discussed the problems in drawing EU funds, the relations of the state and local governments and the prepared new Building Act. Transport is also an important topic in this region. Therefore, I am glad that we could jointly symbolically lay the cornerstone of the Košice bypass with local government representatives and Minister of Transport Andrej Doležal. The people of the eastern Slovakia have been waiting for this for many years.”

The president was also interested in the social situation in connection with increase of prices. She met with single mothers and fathers at the Pastierik centre for mothers located in the the Dargovských hrdinov housing development.  She expressed her appreciation for the fact that the government is providing assistance which primarily focuses on this group of people and is not just a one-time benefit. However, she added that several groups of people have been prevented from receiving this assistance, such as pensioners with low incomes, the disabled who cannot work, low-income individuals with adult children and no children. “All of these groups are similar in that after they pay for housing only very little money remains for other basic needs. Therefore, it is necessary to revise the presented measures to ensure that no one in need will be forgotten.”
