Zuzana Čaputová and Borut Pahor opened the Slovak-Slovenian Business Forum

Zuzana Čaputová and Borut Pahor opened the Slovak-Slovenian Business Forum

On Wednesday 22 July 2020, the President of the Slovak Republic Zuzana Čaputová, and the President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor, opened the Slovak-Slovenian Business Forum. The main topic of discussion was innovation in the economy.

The Forum was initiated by the Slovak president with the ambition  to provide space for a more active cooperation and open up new opportunities for Slovak entrepreneurs in sectors that are critical to our country’s modernisation. In the president’s view, the circular economy, clean mobility and digitalisation are topics that Slovakia must prioritise in the next few years in order to make full use of the historic opportunities offered by the European Recovery Plan.

The Business Forum, held in the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, provided a platform for the presentation of firms in the fields of electromobility, charging infrastructure, more eco-friendly production of materials and plastics, waste management, automation and digitalisation. The forum heard from around 30 Slovak and Slovenian firms and associations. The event was also attended by scientists from the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Slovenian Jožef Štefan Institute, as well as representatives of national platforms (Circular Slovakia and SRIP). There were also representatives of the port of Koper in Slovenia, which is a key logistics node for Slovak exports to the world.

In her speech, President Čaputová stated that society was slowly recovering from the pandemic and the measures taken to contain it, but business and the economy were entering one of the most difficult periods. According to her, profitability and environmental sustainability are not mutually exclusive. She also suggested that since Slovakia and Slovenia were neither geographical nor economic heavy-weights, they should concentrate on innovation, cooperation and learning from each other.
